Rep. Davidsmeyer Statement on Graduated Tax

Rep. Davidsmeyer debates SJRCA 1.

Springfield, IL…Assistant Republican Leader C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville) released the following statement on passage of the graduated tax amendment (SJRCA 1).

“The House Democrats have proposed an additional $12 billion in new spending, just in the last 4 months.  This income tax increase is expected to bring in an additional $3.5 billion.  Basic math tells me that they will be coming back to each and every one of us asking for more.  Their appetite for more spending and bigger government will never go away.  This tax increases doesn’t even cover new spending proposed this year!

“When a business loses customers do they raise their prices?  No, they lower prices and invest into better products to attract customers.  Like a business with an old product, Illinois is losing population because people don’t like the product Illinois is providing.  We must change, pass reforms, and turn Illinois into a better product for our constituents.

“The graduated tax proposal is like a fairy tale where someone else pays the bill, but we all know there is no such thing as a free lunch.

“What this tax will do is force wealthy Illinoisans out of state; taking their businesses with them.  Thus leaving the tax responsibility to the middle class, along with less job opportunities for each and every one of us.

“Raising taxes on the people of Illinois is not the answer to our problems.  We must change the way we operate in this state.
